I am in the process of getting a '93 RX-7 and need a mechanic (who knows what their doing) around the LA area to look it over and perform any/all of the 'reliability mods' (downpipe, AST tank, colling fan, radiator, hoses, ect...).

I'm not looking to perform any performance mods (yet), I just want peace of mind for now and get all the reliabilty mods out of the way.

And how much can I expect to pay to have all these mods done?

I would attempt to do it myself, but have never worked with this type of engine before and don't want to take the risk of causing any damage....

If anybody out there who can do this (or can recommend somebody who can), please let me know!

Thanks,

For OEM stuff my friends like to go to Haines.... it's somewhere near Monterey Park/El Monte area. Their prices are pretty competitive. Some other local favorites are:

Rotary Reliability Racing in Santa Ana: they have high recommendations, but fairly high prices; $4400 for a rebuild or $2200 for a turbo rebuild

R&R rotary in Upland: I usually go to these guys, their prices are on a per-job basis. Only prob with them is lag-time

Mazdatrix in Signal Hill: I personally like these guys the best. I had them to my 60k service, full synthetic everything/change everything except plug wires & fuel filter for ~$450. Their usual rate is $70/hr but it's worth it

Rotary Power in Torrance: Don't know anything about them

Tripoint in Canoga Park: I've heard good work from them, but they would have to be the most expensive guys on the block: installing a Koyo radiator was going to run me $500 fro JUST labor due to "fitment issues". Soemhow mazdatrix got it installed for $130 (1.5 hrs of labor)

XS engineering in Huntington Beach: They prob have the stongest rep due to some of their projects/parts making into car mags, but I'd say they are the worst to go to. They are expensive, lag, and everyone you talk to other than the mechanic (which you don't get to) are somewhat unprofessional. They are one of the few with a dyno & power fc knowledge, so sometimes you have to.

SP engineering in City of Industry: They have made themselves noticed with their "Supra7", but i'm told they aren't too rotary-friendly. Don't know anything else

Welcome to the forum, good luck, and tell us how things go when the time comes

Almost forgot something important!

Haines is the only one I know of (out of the list) that is authorized to do warrantee work by Mazda. If you get a car with some remaining time, take it there...... AVOID DEALERSHIPS TO DO WORK AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!

Thank yew...... thank yew.....

I am trying to do as much of the work myself IE cheaper and the sense of pride paying for the work to get done is nice but I cant afford it... I did speak with Vic on the phone numorous times and went to see his shop... He is very down to earth and knowledgeable...

OK, Get a shop Manual.. That is one of the first things.. This way you will know how to hook everything back up the right way.. if you are gonna do the things yourself, browse the third gen FAQs.. most of the items you need will be discussed in there.. The engine itself is pretty simple, but the wiring and hoses may suffer damage from the heat of the turbos so you wanna be careful with those things.. other than that.. it will be like working on any other car.. except it is an FD and it is yours..
