ah... NO... you should always put on 4 new tires at once and rotate the tires every oil change. You want the car to be balanced not skewed to one type of handling

If I have 2 tires with 75% tread, and 2 with no tread, I'm not going to buy 4 tires. So if I'm going to do it wrong and not buy 4 new tires, I might as well be wrong the safest way and put the 2 newest ones on the rear.

As with all things, there will be one bunch of experts that claim the new tires should go on the back, and another set that claim they should go on the front. I don't doubt that for a majority of drivers (idiots) that they SHOULD go on the back, but as with ABS, the benefits to a skilled driver are dubious at best.

Speaking of rotating tires. With an AWD car, could you put the tires in any pattern you like? Or would it best to just to go right to left, left to right and keep the same set in the front and the same set in the back?
Kinda a stupid question I'm aware, but I've always been curious about that.

I would stick with the above information!
If you are only gonna buy two tires, turn around and buy two more.
A couple hundred bucks isn't gonna kill ya', the alternative might.
