It is that time and before I go throwing just anything into my new purchase (2004 RX-8, Dark Green, only about 38K miles on it), I figured I would say hello to everyone and find out what is recommended. What do you use? What have you heard is the best? Is synthetic worth the extra cost? I have always heard of Deep Purple brand oil products and was considering using it. Do you get more miles with good synthetic oil or does it still need to be changed every 3000 miles? Any suggestions and opinions are welcome.

no synthetic in a rotary period is a good maddo. i work in a mazda dealer and we only ever use castrol gtx in the rx8, i use vavoline vr1 in rx7s but since mazda says to use 5w20 in the rx8 i have not used the vr1 in the rx8 yet but i may play with that soon.

synthetic is ok, but $$$

what you really want is a mineral oil with the zinc/ppf/piitb wear package, they took out that stuff, for emissions, and now cars eat bearings.

seems like 5-20 is fine

Thanks for the replies. I did a lot of reading on the subject and it seems there is an endless debate on what oil product is the best for our engines with people taking one of 3 sides: the "Synthetic Syndicate", the "Crude Crew", or the "Middle of the Road Mafia". I ended up going with a 5w30 Castrol GTX because my vehicle already has 36K miles that have been achieved while running non-synthetic oil and I have always been told that you should really continue to use whatever the engine was broken in on. That and when I looked at the price of the Royal Purple I was considering and thought about the amount of money I will have to spend on gas if the prices keep going up, the choice became financially clear. I stepped up to the 5w30 because I live in Mobile, AL and our high heat index summers are not a friend of 5w20 grade oil.

Anyway, thanks again. See you around the forums.
