1989-1990 Mazda RX-7 GTUs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1989 brought with it not only the "refreshed" version of the 2nd Gen RX-7, it also brought with it what would become the most sought after version of the 2nd Gen bodystyle. In 1989 the GTUs was released, or should we say, unleashed to the public. Bearing special 16" spoke alloys, GTUs badging, a special 4.30 Limited Slip rear differential, this Normally Aspirated RX-7 was essentially a TurboII model, without the Turbo. The TurboII version of the 5-speed manual was the only transmission offered in the GTUs, as is fitting for the audience the GTUs was meant for. In 1989 there were a number of GTUs' produced, however should you ever come across a 1990 GTUs, you have found something incredibly rare. Mazda produced exactly 100 1990 GTUs' before discontinuing the mark. To this day Mazda officially denies on paper that there were ever any GTUs' made after 1989.
GTUs Interior: The interior of the GTUs was a minimalist's dream. The stereo was typically a scant AM/FM reciever with an optional Cassette-CD combination unit. Leather was not an option, neither was an automatic transmission. Seats were identical to those found in the TurboII however these seats had a special striped fabric design. As with all other 1989 non-convertible RX-7s, snake-type seat belt harnesses were made standard.
GTUs Exterior:
Hardly distinguishable from other RX-7s the GTUs was the sleeper of the group. Under the hood was the same Normally Aspirated 13B powerplant as used in the other RX-7s, however, this beast had a few suprises elsewhere. Starting at the front of the car, the GTUs recieved a special body colored "chin/lip spoiler" under the front facia, the same chin spoiler used on the Turbo models of that year. The hood was made of lightweight aluminum, weighing in at about half the weight of the steel hoods used on most other normally aspirated RX-7s. The wheels were identical to the Turbo models of the 1989 year, a special thin spoke alloy design in 16" size. There was also no sunroof available on the GTUs package.
