Basically, water is injected into the intake stream to evaporate and cool the intake mixture to help reduce detonation problems & allow more boost or timing advance.

Since detonation is such a critical problem with the rotaries, it seems water injection would be a good solution for higher boost engines. Have people tried this, and if so, how well did it work?

Yep has been done. I run the PINZ Vapourjet system linked to my Haltech E6X. Heres some info: http://www.pinz-online.com/

Of most interest with WI is that you can lean the mixture back to best power mix(13:1) with the obvious HP gains that come with that.

The combustion dynamics are most interesting if you study them. Water is most definately NOT inert in the combustion process.

That's sort of what I thought. Running rich can't be good for power output. What kind of gains do you see from being able to run a "proper" mixture? Also, I suspect the water flashing to steam would probably help add some power, or help keep the housing clean, or such.

I don't have numbers for a rotary I'm afraid. The fundamental research suggested up to 30% more power by allowing more boost, or 30% less fuel used. But that was on a 27 litre merlin engine. However the fundamentals are the same.

In terms of power lost by running too rich without any WI, standard text books put it at around 5%. Not huge, but on a 400HP engine thats 20HP, and some people will pay $$$ for that 20HP.

It works very well. We have had great success for the last 3 years with our Rx-7 and our water injection kits. I have pictures of a dual stage kit installed on a 94 Rx-7 if anyone wants to see:
