If you get the new book on the RX8 there is a whole chapter on various engines that have been tested. This includes a number of direct injection schemes AND a very interesting combi port where a small PP is used for cruise and low throttle openings, with the side ports for power.
What is most interesting about this is that a reed valve is used on the PP. this gets around a lot of the reversion issues that PPs are noted for as the valve prevents it. At low throttle openings you don't worry about not getting the pulse tuning effects.
And before someone freaks on a 'low power' PP, remember the NSU 80. That was peri throughout.

Yes..Lots of today technology is not new at all, just a refinement of yesterdays ideas...
NSU-John Deer and GM have all contributed to today’s wankels.
The semi-perif setup is also not new.....
Many guys in Puerto Rico have been using this setup for years but have kept it on the down low For obvious reasons...
This is ONE reason why 6-7 second rotaries there are easy to find....
