Fear and Loathing at Richmond Dragway
#1
So the wife and I packed up the kids and headed to the dragstrip last night. Wanted to see how the new Hoosiers hooked up. My wife was driving the 7. She's pretty good at getting through the gears and much better than me at the light.
Anyway, she's putting up some mediocre 14 second times and bogging the car on the launch. She said the car felt slow. I'm like "You're slow!" Asked her to eyeball the boost gauge next run and see what it's hitting. She comes back and says it's only 9 lbs. or so. I check the (manual) boost controller, and somehow the setscrew has vibrated loose in two years. Go figure. I cranked it in pretty far and figured we'd get one more run in and take the kids home. She goes out and bogs the launch one more time, runs through 1 and 2, and looks at the boost gauge at the top of 3rd. 18 psi! She shifts to fourth, sees 18 psi again, then backs off. The car smokes a good bit, then stalls out. No restart. She rolls to a stop off to the side of the return road and calls me. I don't have any tools and figure it **** the bed, so we call for a tow. Fifty bucks later it's home. Tow truck owner was a really nice guy.
Pulled the plugs this morning. They're wet. Did a compression test. Nice and even, but only 80 front, 75 back. Dried off the plugs and put them back. Started right up. Runs as normal. Haha.
She did say the car felt faster on that last run. I was half hoping we'd blown it up so we could start with a fresh motor, but my fuel map is pretty conservative, especially on high boost, so I had a half a feeling it didn't pop an apex seal. I need to lean out the fuel pretty much everywhere. The last time I messed with the idle and primer maps was in the middle of the winter.
All in all, a fun outing. Saw a couple nice Cobra kit cars. One was a 427. A nitrous-fed chevy was running 9-something at 140+. Not at all crowded, but some nice cars. Nobody wrecked. One kid kept trying to get his 70's Camaro down the track, but it wouldn't stay running that long.
Anybody else been to the strip lately?

you have a haltech ? i can get it tuned very inexpensively for you.... untuned cars suck!
Yup. It's a E6X. I've fiddled with it some. Got an Innovate LM-1. Used Hitman's map for a starting point. It's very driveable, but obviously could use a tweak here and there.
Inexpensively? I'm listening!
