Look for a 92 made before april or older they have the 6 bolt much more reliable than 7 bolt........yes, DSMs can be very unreliable(drivetrain wise) if treated wrong but will do just fine for a DD if you have minor mods like exhaust mbc ect...But take it from me these cars are very very hard NOT to mod! to learn more about DSMs check out www.dsmtuners.com

Go talk on the DSM forums for awhile that would be your best bet. There's two good and useful forums 2gnt and DSM Tuners like I8URV8 mentioned.Good luck.

I had a roomate that has one, and another guy i went to school with has one also. If you can find one thats fully loaded its a really nice car, and they should be for what they cost new back in the early 90s. Things too look for are the bigger brakes w/abs, leather, sunroof all that. As far as being reliable, make sure that the sychros are in good shape, that you can downshift smoothly. When they start to get messed up you'll get a "clunk" when you shift into 1st from nuetral. Being in NJ you have the advantage of being in center of the DSM universe, there is a tranny shop up there that is really good and inexpensive if you need it. I'd recommend getting a stock one and leaving it like that for the most part, 16g with a front mount also makes a very nice and realiable almost stock daily driver. Everyone i know has gone huge now and the reliability is worse than my car.

Get the AWD..I made over400hp for about 2 years on stock motor,it was totally reliable..I just went through a few clutch disks, and a crank pulley before it got hit and totaled..It was a galant though btw..

The 93 and 94 have the stronger 4 bolt rear ends. You only need the beefy rear end if you are lookin to run low 12's or better in a full weight car. Otherwise the 3 bolts are fine. The 1st gen 7 bolts dont crank walk like the 2gs do. The trannys typically begin to have shift fork failures after you install a heavy clutch. The clutches have problems disengaging unless you have them adjusted JUST RIGHT. This causes realease issues that make the clutch feel "notchy" Its hard on the cast aluminum forks when shifting, and eventually breaks them. Replacing the forks with steel ones solves the fork issue, but accelerates wear on the synchros. Making sure the hydraulic system is in top shape will lead to a longer tranny life. Dumping the clutch in an AWD is a sure way to spit out the center diff as well. NEVER DO THIS. They need to be slipped slighty when launching, and if you are racing often, this will lead to replacing the clutch quite a bit ( every year for me ). The motors are rock solid ( yes even the 7 bolt, dont believe all the bullshit on the net, bad stories start and develope into a craze of internet crap ).

They will put 400 to the ground on cast parts. They are very easy to mod, and can run 12's on the stock turbo at sea level. ( We went 13.2 at 4200 feet with one, stock intercooler, stock injectors, blah blah, only had exhaust, boost controller, AFC and a pump ).

They can be daily driven in 12 second trim, much faster and they start to be only brought out on the weekends. I went 11.7 in mine at 4200 feet (full weight). Stock cams, stock manifolds, 2.5 inch exhaust, and a 50 trim turbo ( other supporting stuff of course). They are fun and great for street racing because the hook so damn well on radials.

ABS is nice, but cramps up the engine bay, and a lot of intercooler kits wont fit an ABS car.

Thats all I can think of for now.......
