I drive an 80 GS.
Today after changing the oil, fixing the timing and replacing the water pump and starter, I got on the highway. Once the car got warm, I decided to head back. I didn't take too much notice of the beige 4-door getting on the onramp in front of me. Put it in second. Third and i'm still not paying attention to the fact that he's still the same distance ahead of me. The highway, once you get on it at that point, is uphill for about 200 yards. Once I was in fourth, I finally realized that this '96-ish 626 had me beat. I have no idea how fast we were going at the top of the hill, since the liberals put an 85mph speedo in my car. Brake lights on the top of the hill, thumbs-up to the driver, who looked about 16, a year or two younger than me.
I hope to God it was the V6 model.

That blows... 626 4 cyl- 125 6 cyl- 165 compared to the stock 100 hp your 80 makes, its not that surprising that he beat you. I love first gens, but a lot of stuff can beat them out there unfortunately

I had an '89 626 with the 12-valve 4-banger. It was a nice torquey engine that got great gas mileage, and it was a great car that ran well forever, but it wasn't the fastest thing on the road. I remember racing from a stoplight to about 65 mph and being edged out....by a Toyota Paseo.
The 1st gen was quick in its day. There weren't many fast cars around in 1980. Hell, V-8's were only putting out 165 HP. Nowadays, just about any car comes with a 200+ HP V-6, at least.
