What kind of stereo system should I get?

I own a mostly stock '91 RX7, and i need a new radio and speakers. I would also like to have a cd player, but I want something that will be very easy to install in place of the stock radio. I'm thinking about a Sony Xplod system, but I would like to know if there is anything else that would be a good upgrade from stock. Thanks in advance.

i wouldn't go xplod.. i had a top of the line x-plod head unit with an extremely nice speaker/sup (all pioneer) set up.. sounded good, BUT i swapped out the xplod head unit with a pioneer one and the difference in sound was phenomenal..
i adjusted setting for both units to my liking, but the sony never had the fullness that pioneer had. also, with the pioneer you could adjust almost every speaker individually, and had the ability to manipulate every little thing.. it wasn't even confusing..
the sony on the other hand did not have the variety of options that pioneer had and the display didn't look half as nice..
both head units were priced about the same.

I have been happy with mine. Granted I can't control every speaker, but it has built in equalizer's, and one where I can set up the EQ myself. Also has sub/amp options.
amp and sub however, I went with pioneer. have single amp 760w single channel output max power, and 2 12" sub's w/ 800w max power. It works decently in the jeep, I just need to get off my *** and build up a box, it sounds like **** right now. LOL

i have an eclipse head unit with 6.5'' separates front and back, eclipse 4 channel amp running them with an eclipse mono pushing 2 12'' eclipse titaniums. sounds supurb. but eclipse is expensive, if anything else id do alpine, but for about 400 bucks, get alpine cda-9843 and 2 pair of 6.5'' type x coaxes front and back... no need for an amp. trust me, sounds good

Well let's see.
I have an 87.I am going with 2 alpine Component type x SPeakers for up front and 2 alpine 6x9 Coaxes in the back, with 2 alpine type R 12inch 500W RMS 1500W Peak Subs in custom sub box with Panisonic headunit.
Sonds amazin

I'm a big fan of Alpine stuff, very high quality for a good price.
Alpine makes some AMAZING stuff, for the most part the prices are very competitive, Except when you are paying 1000for a 1000watt Amp. That kind of hurt, but that's okay.
I like the Type R over the type X, to me they sound better.
Coaxes in the back. because no one sits back there.
Components up front, that's where it counts.
Maybe have a set of coaxes put into my sub box.
Truly phenominal stuff though.
