I went to my math class this afternoon, and the teacher is going through her speil. We get to one section and she says to solve this type of problem you should just plug random numbers into the function until you get the answer you want. My jaw dropped. I waited for her to possibly give a different way to solve them, but she continued on to the next section. So I imediately got up, walked to the front of the classroom, put my syllabus on the table. Proceeded to walk back to my desk gather my belongings and started for the door. She asked me what I was doing, I turned and replied "I refuse to be taught by someone whose idea of solving a problem consists of ONLY plugging in random numbers." Turned and walked out the door.
I am sorely dissapointed in this action. I honestly expect more, even a third grade teacher wouldn't say something like that, let alone support the idea. Now I am re-arranging my schedule so that I can get into a different section with a different teacher. I am appalled. Tomorrow I am going to schedule an appointment with the dean of the Mathematics department and talk with him/her about this specific teacher. I am having a hard time believing that this actually happened.
