actually the lidar guns are handheld and very common and fire 1000 samples per second at a speed of around 984,000,000 feet per second. yeah those nanoseconds give you a whole lot of time to react.

and i was wrong at about 1000' the laser beam is about 2ft wide

yes but the cop must be stationary to use it, and can only shoot at approaching or departing cars, nto a car directly to the side of him.

therefore he must be visible. Also in reference to your "inch wide beam of light", ever bought a laser pointer? point it at a wall from across the room....notice how it gets bigger the farther away you are? Therefore it isn't some inch-wide beam of light. (nevermind your second reply corrected that https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR )

also if you're scared of lidar, drive in the rain, or any foul weather, hell even minor dust storms have the potential messes up its readings.

"Over 30,000 laser guns are in operation throughout North America and currently almost every state's law enforcement agency uses this weapon. Chances are you've been targeted without even knowing it!"

quote from k40's site

and for the 7 drivers i found this interesting laser fact:

With no plate- detection range of a Mazda RX7 with headlights retracted is around 800 ft.

yeah the vette is the same way especially with a reflective surface, but that doesn't help the back end out. now on a 7 it would change if you had a fmic, that's nice large target.

teknics 05-29-2003 01:59 PM

everything you need to know about lidar

and here's a nice rpely for the k40 quote:

For anyone who gets a laser ticket, we encourage you to fight it. That in itself isn't news, (we encourage everyone to fight all speeding tickets) but lasers are not on judicial notice in New Jersey. In fact, they're not on notice in 95% or more of the country's courts. The prosecution teams around the country are glad you don't know that.

well actually it's from 95 so not sure if it's still a valid quote.
