I see what you're saying. But on that same note with a longer time rather than be more responsible they might abuse it. I don't think that big companies are very accountable right now as a general rule and I have a hard time seeing that helping anything but i'm open to any ideas.

They break it up into 4 points and say "Well this is where we are now, this is where we want to be by end of the next quarter, this is where we want to be by next year, etc." It just makes it easier to analyze data. They do view it yearly. But they divide that up into 4's to help make the year itself easier to break down.



Basically, they're not ONLY focusing on that quarter. It's just for data analyzation.

What they report may be totally different from how they actually feel about the long run, short run, etc. They're required to report certain things, but withing the company, they may indeed look toward the long run, and may not even care about the stuff they're required to report.



I'm just digging in my memory for "financial accounting vs. managerial accounting."

yeah you have a good point. im thinking theres less temptation to cheat if we loosen the focus from something quarterly to something maybe longer term?
