Japan is fun, but its seriously expensive. Even more so now that the dollar has been falling in value. Hotel is what will kill ya. I thought about getting an all Japan rail pass, but I ended up just doing the local thing and using the coin machines. It turned out to be cheaper. Once you figure out what the cost of going to station to station, and use the fare adjust boxes (they do have english menu's) its really easy. I was getting around like a local in 3 days.
There is so much to see and do there, Id recommend get on a tour group. As much as tour groups can suck, they know how to get to difference places via bus, and you do not have to walk far or take a cab. Oh, do NOT take a cab in Japan unless you are out too late and the trains stop running. Cabs are insanely expensive.
Anyways, its one of the best vacations ive had. I think I spent nearly 3k including airfare. And that was when the dollar was 1.00 per 1.20 of yen.

Ive paid $30.00 for a medium sized bottle ofgood sake so the prices seem about what im used to. Around here in the parks and things a bottle of beer can cost $6.00. One day I'll end up going, I've wanted to for a while but right now isnt a good time and moneys gonna be tight but someday!
EDIT: i just looked at my last bottle of sake, it was only 300ml. Made by TENZAN, off topic anyone know of a good place to buy it online?

Japan is really expensive now with the Yen rate being $1 to 102Y...sucks when your beers are costing you $8 a bottle and you have to drink 20 of them to be really lit.
