86 N/A FC swap to 13B-REW
#1
Hey. This is my first rx-7, and i jumped for the first one i could get. I just love the cars. Downside is that its an n/a and i just cant drive around like that. I can fairly easily get a 13B-REW, so thats the easy route to take. I need to know what i need to get for this. I know i have to find engine mounts since the fd engine mounts on the rear housing area, and the n/a transmission wont take the power. I basically need to know everything to do. lol.

If you search you will find everything you need to know.
The REW mount kits are pricey. The swap REQUIRES a standalone. You don't need a TII trans, but it is recommended. You need a FMIC from the get go. Larger fuel pump. The twin turbos kinda fit, a single kit will set you back more than the cost of the engine itself. Since you have a 1986, I can only hope it is a 5 lug car. If not, you need all the 5 lug swap parts, and TII brakes, etc.
Kinda pricey don't you think?
Better idea-
Do a TII swap.
Even better-

I offer the mounts, click on my sig to order them. There is another member on this forum in the middle of the swap right now, and given how many mounts Ive sold, there should be quite a few more in progress or already done.

and you'll need to swap the flywheel ive been told. not sure though.
i once wanted to swap in an REW. i went with the Turbo II though. mainly because it drops right in. and with half the money, you'll be just as fast. or faster.

First off, let me just ask, have you done the swap before, or had any first hand experience with it, or my swap mounts for that matter?
Anyways, Ill answer any questions regarding this swap you or anyone else may have that arent already answered in the threads I posted above.
Heres some REW specific information.

Ok. Well im going with the REW mostly cuz of availability of everything. Also, after many grueling hours of research, ive read that i could mount a custom crossmember at the rear of the engine cradle to mount the stock FD mounts to. That came from another guy who actually did the swap. Also, i guess everything will slide in, with the exception of making custom oil cooler and radiator hoses and a front mount intercooler. All that i can custom make myself and mount myself. I enjoy getting creative with things. I read that the flywheel will accept the FD clutch, but will the clutch fork from the fc tranny actuate the pull type clutch? and what should i swap the rear end to, keep it independent fc? I plan on seeking out some track days with this car, road racing style

sorry. i need to correct myself. If i use the stock FD flywheel, can i get a push type clutch to mount and just use the stock T2 tranny and bellhousing. i know it will mount all nice nice, but will the clutch work?

Quick shopping list:
- S4 tII transmission
- S4 tII clutchkit
- S4 tII flywheel
- FD Automatic Counterweight
- FMIC
- Motor mounts from Mazdaspeed7
- Aftermarket ECU - Cheapest way to go is Power FC (800) and the wiring adapter from Banzai (300). ( No wire splicing required )
- Fuel pump upgrade ( I went with Walbro 255lph )
After this stuff - its up to you as to what mods you want to make. Before you decided to upgrade the turbo's, make sure they will fit.
Also, you might have to de-power your steering rack or get a non-powered one. I deleted my AC and Powersteering to make room so I could actually work on stuff. Also, I learned this one the hard way, Dont buy any strut tower bars before the engine is in. I bought my 325$ bar and now - its garbage.

Mazdaspeed7, your going to have to pardon my ignorance again. I misread the information youve given to others and thought the clutch had to be of the same type of the engine. I now understand its of the tranny. Cant believe i messed that one up. Im top of my class in school in the auto tech department, and its pretty embarrassing to mess that one up. lol. so what would i need exactly to mount an s5 t2 tranny to the fd. everything related also.

You dont want the S5 Transmission if you've got an S4, you want the S4 tranny as it will bolt RIGHT up to your car. I ran into the same problem, I've got the S4 tranny and an S5 car.
And for the tranny to bolt onto the motor - look at my other reply.
I forgot - You'll also need the corresponding starter to the tranny/flywheel combo.
