To Lap Or Not To Lap?
#1
I am in the middle of rebuilding my engine. I was wondering what other people did when rebuilding their 3rd gen RX-7's. I do have some wear on my side housings and I was planning on getting them lapped. I read somewhere that lapped housing will only last 30K to 50K, is that true. I guess that lapping will remove the nitrite coating on the side housings.
What I am looking to hear is that people have lapped the side housings and they have last well over 50K miles. Anyone?

You can have the plates lapped then nitrided again. I personally wouldn't use non-nitrided plates as I have also heard they wear out very quickly in the S6 motor. One factor is the higher spring pressure of the S6 corner seal springs, which along with the side seals are responsible for most of the plate wear.
Are they really that bad?

I had to have all four side plates lapped due to a shitty rebuild by another shop 18 months back. The motor is doing great, but it only has like 3k miles on it.
andynogo, that's a shitload of mileage, man.....almost 200,000! Your'e only on your second motor? That's gooooood ****

Yeah, umm, that was good.
I'm in the middle of a rebuild at the moment!
Low compression- probably would have gone on for a while but I want to get really stupid and hit the strip.
At least I know what the motor's like when I've rebuilt it... and only me to blame if it **** up!
