Gearbox Noises
#1
My gearbox is 335,000 km old now (about 210,000 miles!) and is making a few noises.
When accelerating in 1st, 2nd. 3rd and 4th gears below 2500rpm, the box makes a rattling/chattering type noise. Above this and the noise disappears, and on light load the noise isn't there either.
I am about to rebuild the motor (done it before) but never done a gearbox- anyone got any ideas as to whether it's worth it and what might be the suspect bits? (I can get a "low mileage" jap box for $700 aussie).
I was thinking mainshaft bearings (and possibly input shaft bearings as it also makes a chattering noise at idle in neutral with clutch out but not with clutch in).
Now let's see how many replies get posted with "drive it above 2500rpm!".....

Yeah, but I've got all the running gear out anyway, and I thought if it's easy.....
those noises sound like normal wear, when its louder than the radio its time to fix it
