Syntec = synthetic oil. Rotaries don't like synthetic oil. They burn oil, so normal decomposed dinosaur juice is best. can't really say it simpler than that.
I've been running MOBILE 1 in my car for the last 50k miles. Last winter I rebuilt it for a coolant seal failure and had way less than average carbon build up in all six faces. And I drive conservatively...mostly around town with the occasional autocross. There is nothing wrong with quality modern synthetics IMO.
To answer the OP's question, I've never run Castrol Syntec, but if it's ester based, it's probably fine. With rotaries your typically dealing with at least some fuel dilution, not to mention there's always oil stranded in the cooler(s). Especially true on the R1/R2 models. Plus, your OMP sources the oil from the crankcase supply. IMO it's way more important to change it frequently than whether it's standard petroleum or synthetic. It costs more, but I like synthetic mostly for it's higher heat tolerance and performance in the turbos.

...its one of those topics that will ever be discussed...
...but the fact is, if you don't have the twinds anymore, there's no reason not to use synthetic oil.
I will agree that not every synthtic is useful in a rotary, but there are few oils that seems to be perfect. Like Motul 300V or Silkolene Pro S, and some others. Search a rx7club and you find some interesting facts, i will give Motul 300V a try as i'm going single now...

Hey metalcörchen
Using mobil1 0w-40 fullsynth with synth 2stroke premix (yes that's right, even the premix oil) for years now.
car runs great
guys, stop spreading that "oil must burn"-bullshit. oil has to lubricate! otherwise injecting it doesn't make much sense
