The true heater core is up under your dash. And to find it (because there is an AC box, and heater box, and I can't remember which is whick). Just follow the hoses that go off of your engine's main cooling lines (the two big ones that go to/from the radiator). And there will be two smaller rubber lines that go threw the fire wall.

Also to find out if you have heat just turn on the heater!

Ohhh yeah, and seeing as how you have an 88, if you don't have the heater parts in your car, I have all the lines, hoses, fans, boxes... to put it back in.

do you have to remove the dash to get to it? I need to flush mine out.
