I'm used to the ultra-reliable cars that Honda and Toyota offer when it comes to commuting, trips and overall use. Knowing about some of the weak spots in the 3rd generation RX-7 and my resistance to use one as a daily driver leaves me questioning the 2nd generation turbo cars as well.

1.) Granted any rotary engine is going to require more maintainence, what do you guys think of using a Turbo II as a daily driver?

2.) Would you say the Turbo II cars are more, less or of comparable reliability as the 3rd generation RX-7?

3.) Would you contribute the weaknesses of the 3rd generation to the complex turbo system and regard the Turbo II as "safe" considering that the Turbo II is not sequential?

4.) Are there any known weaknesses on the Turbo II models that need to be addressed and looked for?

Any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks.

1) it is fine i did it for six months....

2) T2 is more reliable

3) A T2 with boost under 10 psi is a happy reliable T2

4) Don't boost past 10psi or you will need a new engine

I heard you can boost pass 10psi with a FCD and still be reliable?I guess the injectors might be the limiting factor to reliability tho.

Anyone know if it is typical to run into spiking and overboosting with breathing modifications? Like, could you install exhaust and an intake or what have you without having to find a way to control boost? Or is the Turbo II in the same boat as the FD?

Thanks.

Keep the fluids changed, dont overheat, and a Turbo II will last anywhere from 130k to 180k. I daily drove my TII to work every day and it didnt, and has yet to, give me any problems.

They are far more reliable than the FDs comparing stock to stock.

Other TurboII/FC problems;

The pinion seal on the rear diff has been known to leak.

Theres a pulsation dampener on the fuel rail that can cause a fire if not replaced.

Thats all I can think of for the moment, any other questions just post up!

basically they cannot control boost on a full exhaust..... you do TID and full exhaust it will hit atleast 15-16psi and then you will need to port the wastegate... to control boost

the TII is pretty susceptible to boost creep.

If you run a full exhaust, you'll be needing to upgrade the injectors, fuel pump, and ECU because the turbo will be wanting to see over 10 PSI probably. 10 PSI is the maximum safe limit of the stock fuel system.

Theres also the factory boost cut that you can get by with the FCD you mentioned, but I consider that a really half *** bandaid, and you are heading towards a rebuild if you get one.

Thanks.

5.5 psi for the 87-88 model years, 6.5 for the 89-91s. Plus the 89-91 turbo gives better power and has a larger wastegate to better control bosst creep.
