ok so, I decided to redo the grounds on the engine and in the engine bay yesterday, things went ok but then the car wouldn't startup...would turn over but not start. There were these small black square grounds that I had removed, after replacing them, with a jump the car started again. Would run for about 2 min then the volt gauge would drop right down and it would sputter until it died. tried this 3 different times. Before replacing the "square black grounds" the ignition fuse kept blowing....which was keeping me from starting it in the first place.

the only bolt I had trouble with was the negative batter ground, which the head snapped off. So I drilled a new hole and put a new bolt through it....

so my question's are: what are those black things? they were located on the head of the engine and on the drivers strut tower....

and what might be causing it to lose voltage and die? bad ground? alt going bad?

I replaced the alt (refurbished) about 5k miles ago...

car is an 86 rx7 base model

I also have recently replaced the ECU with a brand new one, but upon replacing it clicks rather constantly when the car first started up, after driving the voltage would straighten out and it would stop clicking....

but now I have no idea?

any help would be awesome : )

thank you

there could be a bad wire on the harness grounding out somewhere, your battery could be low, poor connection to the battery, a bad solenoid somewhere just double check your work and if you got a friend with a s4 fc na have him come over so you can look at his engine bay and double check it that way

sadly I don't know anyone around to help me with it, but I'll certainly be double checking everything...the battery DID die on me due to leaving the interior light on the night I couldn't get it to start. However I left it hooked up to another vehicle for around 8 mins upon jumping it so I'd imagine it would have had enough of a charge to keep going...must be grounding out : (

unless the batter simply having a low charge would let that happen so easily? I do have a slow charger, can let it work its magic tonight I guess and see what happens.

will follow ur advice and come back up results...or...no result

i recently had the 15 amp engine fuse keep blowing on me it was a wire on the back of the alt that kept grounding out and making it blow but its fixed now

yea mine was the 40a fuse....

but she is running again!

I put all the grounds back on and charged the battery....I'm still getting some really funky electrical quirks. Like the clicking from the ECU and the idiot lights on startup like to blink on and off a few times before she's warmed up. I still need to check out the ground on the starter, meant to do it already but I got a little behind with working on it....will tomorrow hopefully : )

The only thing that's concerning me is the readout on the voltage gauge on the cluster...occasionally it's still reading that the alt is only pushing out 9-12...shouldn't it be showing 12-14 at all times?

love the car but it's seriously been nothing but a hastle since purchase....some has been my fault but some has just been the car itself....

anyway, I'll get back with the results with the starter ground....any other suggestions would be excellent from anyone with past experience.....

anyone wanna buy it? haha

mine was that 15 amp fuse by the kicker panel under the dash yea it should be between 12-14 but more like 13-14 go to autozone or some other place and have the alt checked on the car and then off the car

alright so, everything is running ok, it's still giving me odd signals but I decided to work on the sunroof today : ) got the headliner off and the track out, going to be replacing the rusting roof piece with a carbon fiber replacement. Ended up getting a lot of the old grease off the track and opened up the motor...there was nothing left in it, all the old grease is dried up and crumbling, no wonder it doesn't work right?

I also found out where the clicking noise was coming from...bellow the piece that opens up the throttle there is a small black "sensor"? with the key in the acc position it starts to make a clicking noise very rapidly....I tried chasing wires and looking at the wiring diagram to see where it went to but I've got no idea as of yet...maybe the piece is just dead?

Other then that she's back up and running great, once the sunroof if fixed it'll be time for some new paint can't wait...been a pain in the *** but it's slowly working out to be a decent project
