My transmission has the strangest problem I have ever seen in a gearbox. The shifter firmly selects 1st and 2nd. When you slip the clutch to accelerate, the car stalls out. Similar to trying to start from a dead stop in 3rd! When the shifter is in neutral, the reverse lights are on the reverse gear works really good .

Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?....I checked the shifter and it was a little loose (those 3 bolts). Still no luck.

i know its a stupid question but did you check the fluid levle n the tranny and the shifter box? are you shure that the shifter is seated properly? that does sound strange. right now i dont have 5th or reverse. there are some strange things goin gon out there.

did your 5th gear grind before you "lost" 5th and reverse?

there is a chance that it is stuck 1/2 way in anouther gear like in reverse, but the shift linkage poped out of the notch and went back in to neutral so now when you go in to 1st and second it's fighting reverse or anouther gear and wil lock the transmission up. try going in to a gear and then see if you can slide the shifter over in to the gear beside it, if it slips in then that is your problem. The hard thing about this is there are ***** and springs that lock out the other shift linkages when one is moved in to gear so you may not even be able to do this. Dammit.. lol this is really dificult to explain on the internet with words. Anyway can you only get in to 1st and 2nd? or will it go in to 3rd and 4th as well..? then I'll continue with if you can possibly fix it or not with out having to pull the transmission. Also when it's in neutral and you start the car does it try to move at all?

Yep, but I'm not running to the shop at 4:30 am to tear apart one of my trannys to take pic's.. so I'll keep asking him questions and watch shif linkage move in my head till I figure it out.. lol

yah, ive seen roll pins shear too. and linkage jam its prolly something dumb, although if it lost 5th and reverse after having a 5th gear grind, its the broken synchro
