well the obvious tip off is if they used a different compressor housing.
you can sometimes tell if the stock housing is been machined because the lip the tid goes onto gets really thin, and its very thick stock (mines not even centered!)

It's rather apparent. Even if the stock housing is retained, you'll easily be able to tell the difference between one that has been milled for a larger wheel and a stock housing.
