I just got a PRISTINE 88 RX7 convertible. ice blue, black top, blue interior, 58K orig. miles, its excellent. Im a owner of a Buick turbo T, and a Buick GS. the T runs 12s(11s next time out i think) and the GS is restored to stock. but back to the RX7. I want to know if theres anything i can do thats free or low cost. to the motor, for more power. im gonna go with a cone K&N filter on the intake, box it in so it gets cold air, and then im gonna remove the ACV, hook up the sixports to the airpump, and then gut my precats, and main cat. i want to get good low end torque though, so i want to put on a valve where the maincat is, that stays pretty much closed for high backpressure until about 4K rpm. hows this sound? what else can i do? maybe tweak the fuel pressure or somethin, if adjustable. or pull out some restrictions in the intake tract somewhere, do somethin with the ignition timing, im up for anything that is free and doesnt require pullin the motor. thanks guys, im sure this has been asked before, but dont flame me about it : )

There isn't many free mods to do to a NA. And I hope you're not going to try and be running 12s with it (unless you swap in a turbo engine). The convertible is damn heavy for the hp it has (146 hp). I have a 88 vert too. I've put well over $2500 in mods into the car, and it is still slow! (I'd say I'd be lucky to be breaking into the 15s) I recetly bought a turbo, and now I'm the exhaust off of the vert, because it is pointless. I'm just going to use the vert as a sunny day cruiser, and the turbo as the V8 killer.

Some of the free mods I can think of are:

Reducing the cars weight. losing weight is like adding hp, and the vert can use it, it weighs over 3000 lbs.

You can make a tube that goes fom the throttle body to the AFM.

I'm sure other people will have other thing to do too.

so basically, its really heavy, and needs turbo power to run fast. oh well. i still want to make it a bit quicker. ill add a unrestricted pipe from the throttle body to the AFM. what else?

thanks

Welcome to the forum.

First off, the '88 verts are the heaviest and the slowest 2nd gen rx7s. Don't really know what mazda was thinking about that, lol. Anyways, go with the K&N filter and cold air box. And make the tube that leads from the TB to the AFM. For even better intake you can relocate the filter to in front of the radiator...its the best way to get the coldest air, but it takes more customization. Get a free flowing exhaust, and lose some weight. There really isn't much unless you pull the motor.

91 verts were the heaviest, 3300lbs (I think). In japan they were turbo, so mazda was thinking, we just never get the good stuff here in the USA.

U could get some underive pulleys, and swap to an electric fan. And if ur really serious get rid of the a/c and p/s. Change all fluids to redline synthetics, good set of plugs and wires, usuall maintence, have the injectors cleaned, do the atf and tb mod.

if its free you want, the only other thing you can do is polish the intake manifolds. but dont know how much of a gain youd get.

Just leave the car stock and original, the few horsepower you might gain isnt worth molesting the car. Dont remove any engine or emissions controls, your car will not be as drivable, wont be emissions legal, and if you go to sell the car, it wont be original. My car starts when I want it to start, gets me where I want to go, with ice cold AC, and averages 20 mpg with alot of traffic/city driving. If you do the exaust- these cars are VERY loud when you remove the 3 converters, try and listen to other NON TURBO sevens with exaust and see how loud and stinky they are. If you tried and tried, maybe you could gain 20 or so horsepower, but in the end- youll probably just wish you left the car the way it was. Drive one of your other cars if you want something fast, and enjoy your convertible for having nice handling and a nice ride with the top down.
