freash rebuild having troble starting
#1
hey guys an girls i just rebuilt my motor an im having some troble with it... i got it in an all that fun stuff.. but i cant get it to start on its own... it floods real easy.... i have to flip my kill off to unflood it an then it start just i have to keep my foot on the pedal till it starts to get past 1500... an the other time i have had more luck with this i have to push start it... it start like that almost all the time... but i turn it over an i can hear my compression in my exhast... i pulled the plug to unflood it an it sounds really equal... but i hooked a compression gauge up an it was way low like 60 70... i used some mmo worked a lil then some 2 cylce an that was great it start but with lots of effort...but the other day i got it to start everything was goin good driving to get some miles on it trying to build some compression... but it started to run like a honda on 3 plugs... an when i got to like 3700 4000 it would start to run fine but then i would have to shift cause im still breaking it in... then it started to just run like crap an now i cant get it to start i havnt pushed started it yet but im not having any luck with the kill... it turns over an you can feel were the compresson is strong cause the motor jerks a little harder...heres what i all did to it street ported it with pineapple temples... made sure none of my side seal would catch an corner seal went goin to pop out... i went to .005 on my side seal to corner i know it should be 4 from what i hear...but went a little over on a few an had to compromise... im using atkins 2 peice seals with all atkins rotor parts ... i think its two peice its not like the old seal were the apex was two peices with the side peice... the seal is one peice with the corner triangle thingy... but if anyone has some info please let me know im kinda getting to the point were i wanna tear it open again...

Are you runing new rotor housings? If not how bad are they? Your side seal clearance is high. .002 thou is good.
Atkins apex seals are not that great. There rebuild kit is not that great to.
You might have to tear that motor down and do it right......
For a streat car do all oem seals and gaskets. Much better than aftermarket crap.

atkins no good really? I had no probs.
matt: mine had a lot of the same issues (had to push start, floods durring shutdown, etc) for the first two day after the build I let it idle in my driveway though (about 5 or so hours a day while I cleaned the mess out of my garage) after that I still had trouble flooding but it wasnt anything a pump kill switch didnt cure. I also had to crank my idle WAY up to keep her running (about 1500 rpms).
I'm no expert on this matter but I think your compression sounds a-ok for a fresh build using old housings. it'll take a while for your seals to break in properly and they should "build" compression as you go.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: dont tear her back down yet, give her some time to seal up and see if she doesnt run a bit better after a good break in period. mine had a lot of hickups along the way and I wanted to tear back into her more than once but after a month or so she cleaned up and has been running like a champ ever since! (I never did get rid of my fuel pump cut switch though, still comes in handy)
-just my .02
ps
you didnt mention what you were drinking durring the rebuild. you were drinking... right?

hey had sort of the same problem w my fresh rebuild had to change to rx8 spark plugs man what a difference. also check to see if your return line is pinched bent or clogged anywhere found mine pinched between intake and rotor housing causing flooding and hard starts
