Hi guys

I'm new to this forum and I would like to know how I can tell the difference, either visable and/or engine markings between:

86-88 Turbo II series 4 and a 89-92 Turbo II series 5.

You see a guy is sell me a second generation 13bt and I want to make sure that I'm getting a series 5.

Can anyone help me please.

The front bumper looks a little different. The side mouldings are colored on an s5, s4 is all black. The most noticable thing is the round tail lights on an s5 but some people switch them. There are other minor details but mainly look for the details listed above. Just look at the title to see it's year. That's your surest bet.

Also the S5 has more hp (200 vs 183), oil metering pump controled by the ecu, dual TPS, higher compression...

also just by looking at the engine, the coolant filler is different, the S4 will have two radiator caps. one is on the filler neck that comes off the water pump and one is in the center of the radiator. The S5 will have a tube coming of the radiator on the driver's side that as the cap at the end of it. The steering wheel will be different on the series 5 and on the series five the 4 gauges on the left of the cluster are round instead of wedge shaped. Basically just check the VIN, if its a 87-88 s4 if 89-91 s5.

Sorry guys I should have said the engine is not in a car so I need visual engine differences, anything on the engine that can show the difference.

Thanks

S4 will have a rod coming from the throttle body down to the oil metering pump (on front cover), a S5 will have an electrical plug for the omp. Thats the easiest way to tell. Also the dual tps (S5) vs single TPS (S4).
