So every now and then when you drive by a tuned turbo car you might hear that loud whoosh of air between shifts. Now I know the blow off valve is supposed to protect the compressor when the throttle is released, but is it really all that necessary, or is it just to show off and get a little more attention?

What about the pop off valve?

And finally, if i were to get one, what kind would yall suggest? Any kits for a 2nd gen that dont require fabrication?

you dont want to put a system together without a blow off valve, that would be a bad thing. you can get away with no pov

as I understand it, the loud BOV is mostly for effect, just because it sounds cool, because you can have a BOV that vents back into the intake, and doesn't make as much noise. It may make a diff when running high boost though, A POV has a reason for being loud however, if you hear that, it is your signal that your boost has spiked, and it is about time to let off the loud pedal a bit.
