Backup Light Issue
#1
Just installed a recently rebuilt 5-speed tranny in my S5, and after wiring it up the reverse lights are screwy. In reverse, they are off, but everywhere else they are on. It looks like the switch is supposed to be normally open, and closed in reverse, but this obviously is not what is happening. Anyone ever have this issue?

did you remember to connect the connectors properly? normally this happens when they are not connected properly (mixing up connections between the reverse switch and the neutral safety switch)
I matched it up according to the colors of the wires coming out of the tranny. There are 2 greens wires, 2 that each have a single pin plug in. They are all coming out of the same place on the drivers upper side of the tranny. My old transmission also had a 2 wire harness with blue wires, but this new one does not. What you're saying about the neutral switch does make sense though.

so are there two blue wires that are unconnected on your wiring harness since this new tranny does not have them on its switch? (maybe you need to buy a new switch if so?), some electrical cleaner on the connections might remedy this also.

According to the service manual I just pulled up online, the missing 2 wires is the neutral switch, and the 4 wires I have been using are the backup light and 5th switch service (http://www.rx7city.com/Manuals/89-91...mission_NA.pdf) on page 3. I'll have to double check things tonight, though I've already spent some time trying to figure this out.
