87 RX7 wont start
#1
My brother has an Rx7 that we got and we cant get it to start. THe engine spins, and putters exaust while cranking but we cant get her to start. Also the security light on the console is always blinking when the battery is connected. THere is new oil in the car, but the gas is 6 months old, if not older. Andy ideas would greatly be appreciated. THanks.

Another big time problem w/ 7s that haven't been started in a while, or won't start at all is the typical leaking injector....can you push start the car?? Check to make sure that the spark plugs aren't trashed, and also, if one of the spark plug wires is slightly cracked, it could be getting enough interference to make a low spark....just an idea...

I have an '87 that I just got from my Dad. It is cherry, but hasn't been started in..... 1 1/2 years!!! After a cursory examination...no fuel getting to the engine. I pulled the fuel pump. Let's just say we referred to the gas as skunk gas an leave it at that! I drained 85% of the gas (that's all I could get out). I pulled the fuel pump and it was covered with gummy tar/varnish. Eventually had to replace the fuel pump for $69 from the local parts place. I also had to take a straight pin and clean the 3 small holes in the bottom of the fuel sensor (for the low fuel light). Fired right up with a new pump. Runs like a top. Although I still have the annoying 3 beeps periodically while driving (with no idiot light lit of course). Any info on that please pass it along.

Squirrel,
First, the security light blinks all the time, that is normal. After you lock the car, the system arms, then you shut the door, and 10 seconds after the door is shut, the light begins its blinking pattern.
As for your starting problem. Have you tried unflooding the engine? That could be the problem as well as what other people mentioned. First I'd change the gas, that's probably bad. Then check everything everyone else mentioned, fuel pump, spark, etc. But, when you crank it and it sputters exhaust, does the exhaust smell like gasoline? Your engine could be flooded.
To unflood the engine:
Pull the EGI fuse in the fuse block which is the engine bay. I believe it is a 30A fuse. I think some people also pull the fuse next to it, because other wise the tach starts acting screwy, but I can't remember. Anyone?
So, pull the EGI fuse. Crank the engine over for 10 seconds. Allow the starter to cool about a minute. Crank the engine for another 10 seconds. Then put the fuse back in and try starting it as normal. If it still doesn't start and you have tried everything else, it may need the ATF trick. If you get this far PM me for the ATF trick.
