Thumbs up

79 with motor out of an 83 or 84 (12A). a reciently rebuilt carb useing the VB rebuild kit.

ok heres the story. its getting late at night, and i'm tearing up the streets. and i've noticed here lately that its not running at 100% like usual... for about a month now. i figure its just time for a tuneup or something. the guy i bought the car from told me if it started running rough to drive it hard for a bit to clean out the carb some because the gas tank is getting rusty and has alot of crap in it. the tach doesnt work all the time, but its working now so here i go.

about 1/2 way through the normal burnout time it bogs and spits and sputters forcing me to push the clutch back in to let it catch its breath or it was going to cut off. now i'm rolling... a little. so i get it to about 2k in 1st gear and then WOT... spit sputter, i let off a little, it spits a little less and then winds out to 7k, *SHIFT* WOT smooth accel up to 7k, shift (i know i'm a panzee shifting at 7k) WOT smooth accel, so i let off and gun it. as in STOMP the gas, spits a little, then accel up to about 6k where i shift into 4th and decel down to a stop to repeat the process.

heres the second "run"

... only it was more like a long bark, 1/2 a second tops, and then it boged and started spitting and sputtering and doing the "jack rabbit" *clutch in* rev to calm engine down, and let out and get to rolling at about 2k, gun it, only this time instead of pretty much stomping the gas like before, i press it down slower but still pretty quick. up until about 4k, it was doing great, then spits and sputters just like before... shift at 7k, press gas just as i did just before, accels smooth, shift at 7k, shift to 4th, and idle her down to about 35 mph. downshift to 3rd and press gas firmly to the floor, not really stomping it, but a little harder then before, it spits and sputters for a sec, then i let off and do it about the same speed again, it spits for about 1/4th a second then accels up fine.

what gives? fuel pump maybe? i know its getting old... accel pump dry rotting? or would that have came in the VB rebuild kit? (i didnt rebuild it, the guy i got it from did, who my I add is a professional mech.... honda dealership in Raleigh, NC. and he always has a rotary somewhere in his yard.) just a old fashoned tune up help out? its got the nice 4 prong spark plugs, and a new set of wires. oh yeah, upgraded to electronic ignition system, and all the emmissions crap removed. cats are halfway gutted.

i almost want to say that its a problem when the secondaries open up, but sometimes it does it when i'm at low RPMs which to my understanding they dont open until 3.5k or so if you have the gas down a bit.

occassionally while driving, if i shift a little too soon and press the gas a little more than normal, not really gunning it, but just trying to get on down the road it will bog for a split second, then run normal... or if i press more will bog more. its so strange... about the only way that i can get it to do it when i'm trying is to WOT at low RPM's in pretty much any gear, or today.. which really sucks.....

could it just be running way to rich? i plan on charging up my PoS pentium 133 laptop and seeing if i can get the battery to last long enough to record a couple of sound files...

any thoughts/comments? thanks a ton in advance, cant wait till the 7 is in top notch shape again and tearin up the streets.

Check your tach signal wire for a loose connection. This should be connected to the negative terminal of the leading ignition coil (yellow wire with green stripe).

For the bogging, I'd check your accelerator pump. With the engine off (you may need to remove the air cleaner for better visability), you should be able to see a healthy squirt of fuel shoot down towards the primaries when the accelerator pedal/cable is applied.

Failing that, it never hurts to do a routine visual inspection of both float windows to ensure both bowls are at the correct level (middle of the window). You may need to let the fuel pump run for a few seconds with the ignition in the "on" position if the car has been sitting for a long time.

ok, this squirt i am suppose to be seeing... is it going to be a stream, or a dribble? when i did it, it looked more like alot of drops... almost a stream, but not quite. this was with the car in the off position. should i turn it to run (but not running)?

on a side note, i drove the 7 about 300 miles yesterday, and it ran great the whole way.

It might be better to put the tach wire on the trailing coil if you've upgraded your dizzy to an electronic one.
