Won't Pass Emissions Too Rich.
#1
I got a 1985 gs that has 1 idle screw... It's running too rich and won't pass emissions cause it's burning too much gas. What's the deal with that? It needs a new air filter I know that. The cat is working cause the NO levels were low and passed. but the inspector said that it's burning too much gas. Anyone out there that can help me out a little? Trying to get it legal today.
Thanks.
Thanks.

check and make sure the air control valve is working. its on the intake manifold under the carb on the right side. there is a big hose going into the air cleaner, with the engine running there should be no air coming out of the hose under 2000-2500rpms

are you talking about that big hose that goes to the bottom of the carb cover? It's blowing out air under 2000....actually at idle speed it's blowing out air. It's blowing out more air with more rpms. and it's pretty warm air (don't know if that matters).

ok then your air control valve is not working. the air pump pumps air into this valve, and the valve distributes the air to where its needed. under 2000-2500rpms it injects air into the exhaust ports, after 2500 it should dump to the air cleaner. yours is dumping all the time, it could be a few things
1. the valve is bad, its got 2 vacuum diaphrams. they get cracks in them and leak
2. the control system isnt working. the tps tells the ecu to turn on and off the air control valve solenoids, if any like in that chain doesnt work neither will the valve.
you can do a few things, you can rig the valve so it always injects air into the ports, you could try running alcohol/ some of the garontteed to pass stuff, buy a new valve etc

yup, and that's a $350 USD valve. My *** still hurts from that one.
the Einstien who I bought the car from thought the exhaust heat shield was
just dead weight until it came time for the test. Gross Polluter baby!
Mike is right though, ACV is very important for to pass de test.
Sorry my KGB persona kicking in.
