Universal door locks?
#1
Are all locks on 1st gens universal? I used the key for my 1980 in my 1983, because I couldn't find the key for the '83, and I still managed to unlock the doors and hatch. I didn't try using it in the ignition swtich, because I didn't think about trying that until I left the storage place.

I think worn locks are pretty easy to get open with a key that is close. After my friend locked the only key in my T2 the day we got the car, I was able to get the door open with the key from my 626 while we were waiting for the locksmith to show up.

A lot of the locks have broken pins, or sometimes locksmiths remove pins to keep a lock operable. Remove or break enough pins and any key will open it. I opened mine once with a house key. If you want a good set of locks or need to replace a lock, pull the passenger side door lock and get the key code off it. FYI the driver's side doesn't have the code printed on it. Take the key code and the damaged lock to a locksmith that handles import locks, you might have to search around a little. They can usually rebuild a lock for under $20 (I think I paid $7 each last time). A brand new lock set is $200 IIRC.

I went to the storage unit a couple weeks ago, to show a guy the '83 to hope to sell it, and while I was there, I tried the key for the '80 (dupe and original) in the '83's locks and ignition, and it worked for both, and I tried the '83 key (dupe and original) in the '80 (all locks, and the ignition), and it worked fine, too. I didn't think of looking at the cut on the keys. Both of them are the same, meaning either the locks and ignition are shot in both cars, or they have the same exact cut/pattern.

Is there any way to get different/new locks put in?? Or are you stuck with locks only for the RX-7?
put whatever lock you want in there, doesnt make a damn bit of difference, you can still get in the car with a wiper blade or a flathead screwdriver
