Lightbulb

Stock 1st Gen GSL-SE (13B)

I can't seem to find anyone who can give me an explanation or permanent fix for this condition.

I have what seems to be a common problem for 1st Gens. After I start the car & drive it (30 minutes to 2 Hrs - fully warmed up), when the engine is stopped for 30 minutes & up to 4 Hrs it will NOT start.

If the engine is started within 20 minutes or after 4+ Hrs it starts fine. Within that time frame the only way to get it to light-off is to pull the wire from the trailing coil (one with the BLUE connector) it starts. It will keep running if I immediately put the wire back on &/or start normally once the wire is put back and attempt to start the engine.

Can someone explain what is being controlled & why this 'trick' works?

Hi Darryl, wooffinn here. Bit of an unusual one you've got there. That must really **** you off after a while. I not sure I've got your answer as our Rx-7's vary quite a bit in our countries but I've played with a few over the years. If I'm right your GSL-SE had what was called the 'dynamic effect intake system' with the six port induction and electronic fuel injection systems.

I sounds like possibly an injector is leaking down into your chambers causing a flooding or locking effect of the engine. Believe me they don't need much fuel in there to cause a non start.

I'd say the trick with the coil is related to the ECU not sensing that coil and shuting the injectors off. This engine spin time clears all the fuel and on reconnection has cleaner plugs and fires.

It's just an idea as I'm not 100% sure they had fuel injection on that model so maybe my fellow US rotor brothers can help us more?!I, as a mechanic would be interested too with an cure for the problem. ???

It could be the hot start system, but i dont know how to trouble shoot it. Mines had a similar problem, then it went away, but it comes back to haunt me every once in a while.

What i replaced on mines was the coolant temp sensor. I noticed, and this happened again last nite, that if I tried to start the engine and it wouldnt turn over. After cranking it a few times and giving it soem gas(I know I shouldnt, but it works, some times) I get out unplugged the sensor above, jump the wires and it would start right away. Give it some gas. Take the jumper out, the car would turn off. Plug the wire back in and the car would start as usual.

Id say, check the hot start or the sensor. Ill look on how to trouble shoot the hot start and post it here.

Thanks for the replies, so far.

Yes, this is a fuel injected model (84-85 GSL-SE). The only first gen's that were.

As this is one of two of these I have (one exhibits this symptom & one does not), I'll have to get make time to check over all recommendations and compare the two cars with respect to the tests.
