The oil in my 82 always smells pretty gassy compared to other vehicles I have had. I suggest you go with the easy stuff first; change the plugs and wires and go from there. I don't know if all 1st gens use a distributor, but if yours does buy a new cap and rotor as well.

ok, lets see. when you rev it, does it reach 3000rpm pretty quick, or does it get there slowly?? when the engine is running, does it shake like a **** and feels like it wants too rip the supports off?? hows the timing??
You might want to do a compression test. Check the FAQ's there should be a how-to there.
and if you dont already have one get a haynes manual.

it takes a while to get to 3k, does not shake.
i have already checked the timing and have a haynes, which does not seem to cover this type of problem
also, i think i forgot to mention that blows smoke
(unburned fule) untill it starts to warm up
