Unhappy

I've got a 1985 First Gen RX-7 GS. I was going to change the engine oil and accidentally drained the manual transmission oil instead. Now I need to replace it and am wondering where to put it in. I'm also wondering what the best stuff to put in is and how much to put in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's a fill plug on the site of the transmission, has a square head on it. Remove that, fill it to the top with gear oil. If you want to treat your rex then buy some synthetic, otherwise just go with a regular gear oil, can be found in the oil section of the auto parts store... won't say "transmission fluid".

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise, eh? As phinsup says, now is the time to treat yourself and your pony to a nice treat called synthetic gear oil. When you go get your gear oil doin't forget to pick up a pump. This is a cheap plastic device that screws into the top of the gear oil bottle, and it has a long tube that goes into the trans fill hole. Without this pump it's nigh impossible to get gear oil into the trans.

While you're at it, get some extra, drain and fill your rearend as well....3 to 4 quarts should be enough....

Happy trails...

Use Redline if you can find it - especially if you had a notchy shifter or weak synchros. I had both and Redline helps - alot.

I'd also highly suggest a repair manual. If you're only going to be doing basic maintenance, Haynes or Chiltons will be sufficient. The web is also a good source of information, as i'm sure you've learned by finding this forum. Do some research before you start working on your car. It will save you ALOT of money in mistakes.

hey X=RXsquared

Is that redline synthetic gear oil? Is it synthetic gear oil that I'll be asking for? If I can't find that.

intheburgh - little late getting back on this....

Yes, Redline is synthetic - MT 90 in the tranny. I've tried other synthetic brands (castrol/mobil 1), and they did not stack up, IMO, to the Redline product - excellent stuff!! BTW, I've also heard Royal Purple is very good but I've never used it
