Long weekend with the FBs

Well some of you may have seen the previous post where I picked up an '85 GSL for a good deal. It has all the options w/ only 81K on the clock.



Problem was it was "flooding". When I picked it up, the engine was locked. I figured due to sitting for 3 years carbon got to it, etc... unstuck it. Still would not start. Checked compression - almost nothing up front and damned perfect in the back.



Turns out - the motor wasnt flooding, it just popped - which caused it to run like crap and be underpowered and the mechanic who was working on the car before i bought it told the owners it was carb issues, lol. To top it all off, the fuel pump is dead. How ironic that a flooding car now has a dead fuel pump. Anyways... the engine is no good. I decided to pull the engine from my old project car as it was still running.



The '84 white car is my donor with the black '85 now going to be my project since it is in 10Xs the shape.



The '84 has a replaced tranny too, so I wanted to snag that as an extra as the mileage was low enough on it...

First off, the main set of tools needed to deal w/ rx7s that dont want to cooperate! Also, i had to leave the FC project be for the weekend I felt bad, but its days will come soon..

Got a late start after driving back to my parents house (where the cars were). My dad was allowing me to use the garage while they were on vacation in exchange for fixing his rhino (a yamaha golf cart on steroids) and watching the dogs.



I wish the first pic turned out better - i always wanted to look in the garage and see two rx7s.



I was actually working alone all weekend, but my gf was nice enough to snap some pics so i didnt have to get my camera greasy...

Again, i was by myself for the better part of the weekend, so the pics are somewhat scarce - but if you've watched a rotary be pulled once, you've seen it a million times, lol..





Spare hoods make good places to rest engines too, lol.



I pulled the engine/trans together to make it easier, however - the engine will be going back into black car by itself as I prefer to keep the 81K mileage trans in the car for now. I'm also going to swap clutches to keep the better lower mileage one in for now...



This project was all about just getting the '85 to run on its on power, i just needed the white cars heart. I snagged some other parts out of it too so the white car can go away all together. I'm either giving it back to its previous owner - or its going to the junker, if you need anything let me know, lol... not much is left of it i promise.

I got the engine, trans, rear struts, and some misc stuff from the white car.



I was hoping I'd have time to put the engine in the black car - but i ran out of time... I worked on the black car to the point where I can pull the engine out in about an hour next weekend.



It only took two hours to pull the engine/trans from the white car - but i've done it on FBs a few times now so its not a big deal... not to mention the white car was not stock, etc... with emissions.





The one pics is some of the stuff I've got for the project, full RB exhaust, tokico rear shocks, misc junk... holley carb, rb intake & manifold, etc....



Oh and there is a shot of my garage beagle, lol..



I also swapped out some misc interior from the white car since it was the same color. No biggie...

Since I didnt have time to pull the engine from the '85. I did disconnect everything except the trans bolts and exhaust.



I pulled the emissions, the a/c, the ps, front engine mounts, etc. I am putting A/C and PS back on the car though, just needed it out of the way.





Also, the only rust on the car was the battery tray. The one out of the white car was in better shape so I decided to swap it. Funny thing I came across though that I wasnt aware of, but the trays are different between an '84 GS and '85 GSL - the tabs and mounting holes were different, only one lined up. I sanded down some of the rust, and sprayed it real quick w/ rust proof black paint and put the '84 GS tray in for now. But I will need to fix it better later...



I included a before ('85 GSL tray all rusted out) and an after ('84 GS tray in the '85 GSL - sanded painted) pic. It's an area I'll need to readdress for sure though...





All in all, not a bad weekend, but I didnt get near as much done as I wanted to. I'll keep you all posted.
