Clogged cat?
#1
I finally got my 84 gs running today after replacing the fuel pump. Once it stayed running, it smoked like crazy and began to idle real high (wouldn't go below 4000). I let it run for a minute or so, until I noticed the cat glowing. I'm guessing that it's just clogged, but has anyone else dealt with this?
Thanks

Definately sounds like it's clogged. My suggestion, if your in an area that doesn't require emission testing, is get rid of it and get a header and presilencer from Mazdatrix(sponser plug ). Otherwise see about getting a universal cat, at least for the time being. Problem with universals, in you buy a cheap one, the filler will melt in a month or two and you have the same problem all over again.

Another thing...If part of the testing is just a quick peek to see if you have a cat (or if your area has those crappy road-side testers), then just hollow the cat out...That way when they check for it, it's still there, but you don't have the backup that you used to.
That's what I'm going to do...I have a high-flow cat that's been on my car for probably the likes of about 2 years...Definately time to get a new one...I can't afford it right now, though, so I'm just gonna hollow her out.
I tried last Saturday, but the bolts are salt rusted on...No impact was getting them off. I think I'm going to have to use heat or just cut them off...I don't want to do that yet, though...I'm going to get some of that Liquid Wrench stuff and see if that works...I'll let you know if I do it this weekend in case you run into the same problem...
