Unhappy

The patient is an '84 GSL-SE that needs a little more life. I just bought a parts car (GSL-SE) that has a stock rebuild with 40K miles on it and RB streetport exhaust. That is all going into my SE. I want to go with a side-draft. For now the engine will stay stock (high school budget) but this summer I will be pulling it and porting the endplates and using a 12A center plate because it has much bigger ports than the SE centerplate. The question lies in what carb to run. I can get new or rebuilt 44phh's locally from a friend with jets and all. I might also have a line on a 48 DHLA for around the same price. I would like a 48 DCOE but I can't afford it and I really don't need the best. It is a street car so drivability needs to be reasonable. I hear that the PHH and DHLA have better transition circuits than the on/off webers. I have been in a sweet Rx-3 wagon with 13B drilled bridge and a 44PHH and was surprised how hard it pulled even with the small venturies it had. I know RX-Midget and 13B 1st gen have run 44phh miks with ported 13B's and RB style exhaust, how was it? What did they pull to? Anyone have experience with a 48DHLA on a 13B SP? I'd rather save a few $ on a PHH or DHLA and spend the rest on jets and venturies and get it tuned right.

Also, is it worth the tiny bit of extra effort to put the second gen lower manifold on because of the slightly larger primaries or will it really not make than much difference?

I have ridden and driven in a few cars that had mikuni's and was impressed with all of them stockport and otherwise. But why is the smaller 44 better? Better tunablility? Better drivability? Smoother transitions? I know they are easier (than the dellorto) to get parts for... How much are you willing to pay for a mikuni... I have access to a few new brand new ones and a couple completely rebuilt ones from a meticulous rotary buddy. e-mail for more info

I used to have one and its way better than the dellorto in my RX-3. I tried to build a 44 mikuni off a toyota 2t-g with no luck. Im willing to trade my dellorto for any mikuni. Otherwise, I will just sell it to get another 48 ida. My RX-7 has a monster streetport with a 51 ida choked down with a 43 venturies .

Monster SP 13B and you're still behind a 44PHH? Don't see that too often. I rode in a 808 wagon with a 13B drilled (think swiss cheese) bridge port and a 44 mikuni. I was told it was choked down a bit because of too small venturies but they haven't done any serious tuning on it yet. It pulled hard to 7000RPM... I'll be really happy if I can get power to 7.5 or 8k with a 44 mikuni. You're the only person I've heard of that would take a mikuni over a dellorto though. The car needs to be fairly streetable, plans are:

-13B 6-port with 12A center plates (I know, I know... I have my reasons but that is a whole different story. It's the small primaries that choke the 6-ports down the most hence the 12A center plate. Also on a budget here! (manifolds))

-RB streetport dual primary exhaust (got this on a parts GSL-SE)

-carb...I'm really starting to lean towards a 44PHH!

-MSD...maybe...eventually.

Anyway, thanks for the help

Sorry, maybe I confused you. I have an rx-3 with a stock 12-a with aluminum flywheel/kevlar clutch and a dellorto. In the 80’s, my friend’s 13-b half bridge was built by rotary reliability and it had a 44 mikuni. that car kicked *** at street races.

I also have an 85 rx-7 with a 13b monster streetport using a 51ida, direct fire, 22lbs 215mm flywheel and full kevlar clutch.

Im an old school guy and after owning and messing around with different carbs (modified rx-2, holleys, dellorto, mikuni, webber sidedraft, ida), mikuni is my second choice.

You have a good plan converting a GSL-se 6port motor to a 4port. In fact, im using an 85 6port internal parts to a 76 cosmo 13-b block.

well all i got to say is that the mikuni is a great carb for a stock 6port but if you do any type of porting you're gonna need a bigger carb. my car runs hard to 8k with the mikuni setup but its jetted for the high end and the low end its a little sluggish( that and my auxilary ports are wired open ) anyways i would do some research and think hard on what my plans are with the motor before deciding on my carb setup if i were you. look at me now, i got to sell my rb manifold and 44phh cuz im setting up the motor with a sp and turbo, so the best set up for my horsepower goals is a holley 750 cfm with rb or jtech manifold. point is think about what your goals and horsepower figures are so you dont have to spend twice the money like i do.

by the way if anyone is interested the mikuni and rb manifold im selling for 150 $ :bigok:
