Any known mods

Hi all. Hey good call on the exhaust. The rotary engine benefits the most from a good exhaust/header set up. A good system should be an overall improvement of around 15 to 20% over a stock system.
Grab some decent ignition coils and spark plug leads. Any engine will benefit from performance leads and coils. Those MSD units you guys make or the like!!
I'm not sure of your emission laws in all your states but regularly here, customers remove the air injection systems and the REAPS systems.[Rotary Engine Anti-Pollution System for those unsure!!] I'd check with your local 'powers that be' before continuing.
One thing I always do is remove the radiator for a quick cleanout at a radiator shop.If you can't find one just give both the radiator and heater box a good flush out with your garden hose. Good idea also with the oil cooler[obviously not with water though!!]
Another quick one I do. Degrease the engine bay with the engine out. Looks much better when your finished and is a cleaner job with less chance of any dirt etc getting where you don't need it!

As stated before, exhaust system is one of the first things that you want to do. You do need to check on your local emission laws. You can go with aftermarket carbs, ignition and simply getting rid of things in the engine compartment that you don't need. It helps to lighten the car up, even if is a little at a time.
