I have an 85 GSL-SE with RE-EGI. It is a track car, so stripped down (no a/c, p/s etc.). I just rebuilt the engine and am having a bit of a time getting it tuned again.

Ran it last night at the track and it idles fine (oscillates stably between 900 and 1200 rpms). It runs great from idle up to around 5-6k with plenty of bottom end power. But at around 5500 rpms it falls on its face. In other words it runs great from low to mid throttle but there is no difference whatsoever from mid to WOT. I couldn't get it over 6k the whole night.

A fellow RX7 guy at the track took a look and tells me that my timing advance module is bad (the thing that the timing advance vacuum connects to). That seems to make sense to me that that would cause a problem at higher rpms, but I am somewhat of a newbie, learning as I go, and I do not understand the ignition system of this engine enough to figure it out.

Besides that I am not sure even what that part is called, and how to find a replacement.

Can anyone point me in the right direction towards some resources I could use to:

(1) get educated on the ignition system

(2) correct my problem

(3) find parts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
