Hey, I don't really hang out in this part of the forum much...do to me not owning a 1st gen. BUT this guy I work with says he has one he'll sell me for $200. It needs a clutch, alternator and exhaust and hasn't been ran for a while(so I'm not sure if it runs). If it doesn't run, I probably won't get it because I've got enough motor swapping going on right now w/ my SE-X project. The car is an '84 BTW. Here are my questions:

How much hp does the stock 12A put out...I don't remember, and I don't feel like looking it up, lol. This year never had 13Bs, correct? Or did they in the GSL-SE format? What are some things I should look at for a first gen(same things as any rx7?)...my plans are as follows if I purchase the car:

Rip the interior out..as I'm told its faded and trashed

Put an RP clutch in it

Do RB's full exhaust

upgrade carbsetup...if its 12a(anybody have good ideas on a nice carb setup).

repaint it(its brown now)

And then use it as a daily driver. My 2nd gen is the race car, but I wouldn't mind using a 1st gen to beat around in...always liked the lil ones

Any other thoughts or suggestions are welcomed.

paul yaw modifies stock carbs and he is quite the god among 12a folks. He also has some headers for the 12a. With that you should be at 140 HP if the motor is in good condition.

That year had the 13B and it is by far the most rugged 13B made.

the 1st gens have always had some minor issues like sloppy steering and all kinds of idle problems. Other than that the 12a and 13bs from 84-85 are quite bulletproof.

Thumbs up

They did use a 12A/13B starting in 84/going to 85.

GS<12A No power windows.rear drums..geared @ 3.90

GSL<12A WITH power windows..rear disc brakes on LSD with 3.90 gears.

rear wiper..

The 12As came stock with something like 100 hp with 105 lbs of torque..

13B I think was about 137?-147?hp

GSLSE<13B 6 port..power windows..Leather seats..sun roof..4.10 rear end..with posi/disc brakes..bigger brakes in the FT and Rear..and instead of studs like a BMW these has normal studs..that uses lug nuts..

1984/85 Has the best rear end/axles for a 1st gen..You can take a GS rear end..with drum brakes..and drop a 4.10 GSLSE rear end..and have some fun power braking..lol

Even though its a 12A ..you can get a TurboII tranny which is good for either 400hp or 400 lbs of torque..and use it with the 12A with no problem..

ALSO I have seen J spec 12As Turbo EFI on the internet..going for $900. US dollars and ..its stock at about 170 hp..from what I can remeber..

If you need any help..let me know

Ok...thats cool. I've got an extra 13b NA tranny...would that work w/ a 12a as well? I dont think the car needs a tranny, but I might swap it anyways when i do the clutch, lol.

Will a 2nd gen alternator fit on the 1st gen?

Also, will SE wheels from a 2nd gen fit the 1st gens? They are both 4lug. I have to get new wheels on the SE-X project(my current ones arent wide enough)...and I just figured instead of selling my wheels, I'll put them on the 1st gen if I get it...

the bolt pattern is 4x110, so your wheels won't work. 2nd gen alt is a direct fit. The 13B tranny will bolt up but I am sure the shifter location is different.

my best hint for determining the condition of this car is to look underneath the doors.

If the bottoms of the doors is rusted or still solid can tell you alot about how its been maintained; they tend to rust out at that particular spot.
