Generation one codes

Hey all, wooffinn here, your foreign corrospondent mechanic. I'll start the ball rolling with a technical question for all my fellow US rotor brothers.I read a lot about about GSL, GS etc etc in the first gens. Whats the difference?? In my neck on the woods we had three upgrades in the gen one's refered to as series one's, two's and three's But from what I read even our series three which was the top of the line in early Rx-7's[power accessories,4 wheel discs, two toned paint, though I'm not sure about the two tone brown models!! etc] it was a bit dull and under equipped compared to the items on your models. Any info would be great and I'll print it in our next club newsletter and you'll be famous!

Thats a good question Woofin, I hope somebody provides a good answer. My 82 GSL is straight up stock and it has 4-wheel discs, power windows, AC, Cruise, Lsd rearend, Clarion radio, leather seats and doors, and I think that is about it. It does not have power steering, but I kinda like that. I know the 84-85 GSL-SE's had the 13B option, and the others had the 12A.

Hey Isamu, got you stumped too. We didn't get any of the letter codes at all. As an example, my '79 Rx-7 is actually a Japanese spec model which in the series ones had much standard equipment than the Australian delived models. Mine has cruise, A/C and a host of useless electrics. But it has no power windows or mirrors and has a standard diff with drum brakes. Into the '80's models you could get a 'limited' model which has electrics,a/c ,4 discs but all gen ones sported the 12A. Hopefully someone over there can help us out Isamu!? ???

Now, how about you explain to us westeners what did you guys get for 1st gen RX7s. I know they had a 12AT, called the GT(I think). Also, you guys never had the plate under the bumper. And all series 3 came with the 4x114 bolt pattern.
Is this correct?? Maybe some details as to what years came turbo and what not.

Hey Treceb, I'll add a link to his site in the newsletter. The bumper you refer to is what they called a 'safety' bumper. Kinda like a early version of a airbag. There was lots of Mazdas sporting them but its seems only you guys got them. As far as I know there wasn't a model released here with those fitted.
Unfortunately we never got a turbo version of Rx-7 until the mid '80s series 4's and 5's[your gen 2's]. Your right with the 'GT' badge. But as far as I know it was one of those 'Japanese domestic market' vehicles. It was part of 'P132' series Rx-7's, released in 1983. This is same model that you guys got the 13B option in and also called our series 3. But alas, we didn't recieve either of these options. But we did now get power steering,WOW!!
Quite a few guys in the club now run the 12A turbo with much success. As far as I know, the bolt patterns were the same gen two 12A engine though our range of Rx-7's.Most 12A's here are removed for 13B's anyhow!Hope this helps.
